Chinese electric vehicle maker Nio confirmed via its Sina Weibo feed that one of its ES8 vehicles caught fire in a parking lot in Wuhan, the capital of Central China’s Hubei province, on Friday.
Nio said it is investigating the incident and will share its findings with the public. The fire did not cause any casualties.
This is the third incident of its kind in two months for Nio.
In April, an ES8 caught fire when it was under repair. Nio later concluded that the vehicle’s chassis suffered severe impact before arriving the repair site, resulting in deformation of its power pack and cooling plate, causing a short circuit that led to the fire.
And in May, smoke fumed from another ES8 in Shanghai, though firefighters managed to prevent further ignition, according to Nio. It was unclear whether the vehicle was stationary or being parked. After this incident, the carmaker also said it was investigating the matter, though it has not made any announcements regarding the conclusions from its probe.
Elsewhere in China, electric cars made by other brands—Tesla and BYD—have also caught on fire in the past few months.
After multiple self-combustion cases in China and the United States, Tesla updated the thermal management system software for its Model S and Model X batteries in May. The update adjusted charging and cooling settings within a vehicle’s battery management system to regulate each cell’s temperature and charge level.
