Cakap, a leading Indonesian edtech company, has released its annual impact report titled “Fostering Education, Empowering Indonesian People.” The report highlights the company’s efforts to align with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals by focusing on the goals of Quality Education, Decent Work and Economic Growth, and Reduced Inequalities.

As of 2022, over three million students have benefited from Cakap’s collection of over 17,000 modules. The company also empowered more than 1,800 educators via its Cakap Teacher Academy program, which aims to improve the capacity and capabilities of teachers across the nation. Cakap’s reach now covers some 54 out of the 62 3T areas in Indonesia (defined as the most disadvantaged, outermost, frontier regions) as of 2022.

“Through all the solutions at Cakap, we strive as much as possible to contribute and solve real problems in the field of education, particularly in Indonesia, with the hope of improving employment among the workforce and accelerating national economic growth. Since 2022, we have expanded our reach to provide more options for enhancing work skills to the Indonesian people,” said Tomy Yunus, CEO and Co-Founder of Cakap.

The report also highlights how Cakap has developed its three pillars: languages, business skills, and upskilling. In the language pillar, 88.8% of training students experienced an improvement in their foreign language speaking abilities after completing the courses, and 81.7% of students who identified as working professionals felt that the training they attended had a positive impact on their careers.

In the upskill pillar, both experienced jobseekers and fresh graduates saw a positive impact. 86.6% of training students secured job opportunities aligned with their interests, and 74.8% of students obtained jobs related to their Cakap vocational training. In one of the upskill programs, the Cakap Teacher Academy, 72% of participants found job opportunities after completing the training.

In the same year, Cakap partnered with more than 600 institutions, including government and business entities, to provide language and vocational training in various fields. Notable instances include foreign language training for prospective migrant workers in collaboration with BP2MI (The National Board for the Placement and Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers), as well as tourism worker training with PHRI Indonesian Hotels and Restaurants Association, Asparnas (National Tourism Association), and provincial governments such as NTB (West Nusa Tenggara). The report indicates that 93.2% of students have improved their foreign language skills thanks to courses tailored to tourism sector workers.

Gita Wirjawan, Cakap’s Board Member and Former Minister of Trade, appreciates the consistency of the impact report released by Cakap, as an initiative to embody the company’s mission to elevate people’s lives through its contribution to education in Indonesia. The achievements made by Cakap throughout 2022 prove that the capacity-building platform still has a potential market.

According to Wirjawan, there is potential for expansion into other markets. “With proficient foreign language skills, our workforce can compete globally, particularly in the hospitality and IT sectors. This empowerment enables them to elevate their careers,” he said.

After the COVID-19 pandemic era, Cakap is optimistic that the edtech sector will continue to grow as the company aims to benefit 100 million Indonesians by 2030. From a business perspective, Cakap’s consistent positive EBITDA performance over three consecutive years exemplifies how education serves as a powerful tool to empower individuals and enhance quality of life, not only for Indonesians but also for people beyond the country’s borders.
