TikTok owner ByteDance has established an edtech firm called Boxue on March 17, through its wholly-owned subsidiary Xingyun Chuangji, speeding up its education business, according to enterprise data vendor Tianyancha.
Beijing-headquartered Boxue, which means “erudite”, with a registered capital of RMB 1 million, has education consulting, market research, public affairs, and basic software services within its business scope.
ByteDance has already launched a slew of educational applications, including English-tutoring platform Gogokid, vocabulary-learning app Tangyuan, and K12 study portal Qingbei Wangxiao. The firm also plans to release an AI tutor this year, reportedly able to provide individually-tailored learning experiences to K-12 students on a 24-hour basis.
The startup’s founder Zhang Yiming recently declared during the company’s 8th anniversary thateducation is one of ByteDance’s new directionsin the cross-field venture.
“I think [our education business] is still at an early stage,” Zhang said. “It needs more fundamental creativities. However, the premise is that we have a profound understanding of it.”
