Orders placed on Suning.com’s group-buying app Suning Pingou increased 866% in February when compared to the same month of last year, resulting in a 2,061% year-on-year increase in gross merchandise volume (GMV), state finance media China Securities Journalreported on Tuesday, citing an announcement from the company.
The company did not provide detailed sales numbers, but mentioned that tomatoes from China’s Sichuan province, potatoes from Yunnan province, carrots from Shaanxi province, and oranges from Hubei province were the most popular goods on the platform.
Suning Pingou, which app went live in July 2016 to compete with low-price leader Pinduoduo, has streamlined procedures for farmers to open stores on the online platform. Suning.com has also deployed its logistics arm, Suning Logistics, and its recently acquired courier Tiantian Express, to ensure farm produce is shipped on time.
The platform has assisted farmers to produce more than 1,000 livestream promotions last month, generating over 140 million views and more than 230,000 daily orders of farm produce, according to
