Steam is now banned in China. To be exact, Steam’s international service is now banned in China.
On Christmas Day, gamers in China couldn’t reach Steam’s global site. A DNS attack was taking place. Anyone in the country who attempted to access Steam’s service was blocked.
Then, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology classified Steam’s international domain name as “illegal.”
It’s a curious series of events.
Chinese Steam users can no longer access the games they previously purchased.
Steam’s international service is highly preferable over its China-specific alternative. The reason is simple: choice. More than 50,000 games are in Steam’s library, but only around 100 have been officially vetted and allowed into China by regulators.
