Huawei is planning a re-entry to the Brazilian smartphone market with the launch of two high-end handsets later this month, after a failed comeback attempt last year.

“Brazil is a market with very significant opportunities for Huawei,” Ketrina Dunagan, Huawei’s vice president of marketing for the Americas, told

.

The planned re-entry underscores the Chinese tech giant’s need to find new markets, as its North American business is crippled by the US government’s determination to curb its rise in the 5G age.

The Shenzhen-based company currently supplies Brazil with telecom network equipment, but it hasn’t played a big role in the Brazilian smartphone market since 2015.

Last June, Huawei announced a partnership with Positivo, a local consumer electronics manufacturer, to relaunch its smartphones in Brazil, but the deal fell through later.

Huawei, which shipped 206 million smartphones last year, is the world’s third-largest smartphone maker after Samsung and Apple.
