Huawei has unveiled the Mate XT 2, its latest trifold smartphone and the first commercial device powered by a chip based on the Chinese technology giant’s Tau scaling law.
Launched on September 7, the Mate XT 2 is powered by Huawei’s new Kirin 9050 Pro processor, which uses LogicFolding, an architecture designed to improve chip performance by shortening signal paths and stacking logic across multiple layers.
The technology is a key component of the Tau scaling law that Huawei proposed in May as an alternative approach to advancing chip performance as conventional transistor scaling becomes increasingly difficult.
Unlike Moore’s law, which has traditionally linked semiconductor progress to shrinking transistors and packing more of them onto a chip, Tau scaling focuses on reducing the time required for signals to travel across devices, circuits, chips, and systems.
LogicFolding puts that idea into practice by splitting computing functions across two active layers that operate as a single unit. Huawei previously said the architecture would enable its Kirin chips to transition from a single-layer to double-layer structure, shortening critical wiring paths while increasing transistor density.
At the time, Huawei said Kirin processors scheduled for launch in fall and winter 2026 would be the first to adopt the technology.
The Kirin 9050 Pro is the first commercial test of that approach. Huawei said the processor improves overall device performance by 42% compared with the previous-generation Mate XTs, while also improving energy efficiency.
The approach could help Huawei extract greater performance from chips without relying solely on access to cutting-edge lithography equipment, which remains restricted by US export controls. However, multilayer chip architectures also introduce manufacturing challenges, including the need to precisely bond and connect active silicon layers.
Beyond its central processing unit, the Kirin 9050 Pro features Huawei’s Maleoon graphics processing unit, which supports hardware-level real-time ray tracing at up to 50 million rays per second, according to the company.
Its Da Vinci architecture neural processing unit can run artificial intelligence models of different sizes, including Huawei’s Pangu 30B-A2B model directly on the device. Huawei said this enables functions such as AI-powered photo album management without relying entirely on cloud computing.
The Mate XT 2 is also the first Huawei smartphone to run HarmonyOS 7, the latest iteration of the company’s self-developed operating system.
Taking advantage of the trifold display, a feature called “Live-Multitask” can run three applications side by side, with users able to resize each window and control their volume independently. Huawei said it has adapted the interface for use cases including office work, shopping comparisons, financial services, entertainment, and travel.
Huawei has also reworked the hardware underpinning the foldable design. The Mate XT 2 uses what the company calls Xuanwu, a trifold architecture combining an updated five-arm hinge with a multilayer main display incorporating ultrathin glass, high-strength steel, and carbon fiber.
The company said the device is the first trifold smartphone to receive IP58 and IP59 ratings for dust and water resistance under Chinese testing standards.
Certain versions also feature Huawei’s “Smart Shield Privacy Screen,” which uses a dual-pixel design to restrict viewing from the sides while maintaining the display’s resolution when privacy mode is enabled. The feature can be activated by double-tapping the cover screen or using a dedicated control.
Other features include Tiantong satellite communications and BeiDou satellite messaging, along with ECG analysis software registered as a Class 2 medical device in China. The phone itself is not classified as a medical device.
For photography, Huawei has introduced its “True-to-Color Camera 3.0” system, alongside an ultra HDR main camera, a periscope telephoto camera, and an ultrawide camera. The company said the system improves color reproduction by 95% over the previous generation.
The Mate XT 2 extends Huawei’s push into foldable smartphones as its broader smartphone business regains ground in China.
Huawei returned to the top of China’s smartphone market in 2025, according to IDC. Its momentum has continued into 2026, with the company accounting for 22.6% of smartphone shipments in China in the second quarter, up from 18.1% a year earlier. Huawei’s shipments grew 19.4% during the quarter even as the overall Chinese market contracted 4.3%.
Foldable smartphones remain a relatively small part of overall smartphone demand, but Huawei has established a particularly strong position in the category. IDC said Huawei held more than 70% of China’s foldable smartphone market in 2025, when shipments in the segment rose 9.2% to around 10 million units.
The original Mate XT, launched in 2024, was the world’s first commercially available trifold smartphone. The second-generation model arrives as competition in premium foldable smartphones is intensifying.
Xiaomi unveiled the 18 Fold on the same day as the Mate XT 2, equipping the device with its own Xring O3 processor. Reuters reported that Huawei held 68% of China’s foldable smartphone market in the second quarter of 2026. Apple is also expected to unveil its first foldable iPhone on September 9, potentially adding another major competitor to a category currently led globally by Samsung.
Global foldable smartphone shipments grew 18% in 2025, according to Counterpoint Research. The research firm projects shipments to increase 21% in 2026 before accelerating by 37% in 2027. Foldable smartphones still account for only around 2% of the global smartphone market.
The Mate XT 2 is available in purple, white, and black. Prices start at RMB 19,999 (USD 2,972.3), with sales in China scheduled to begin on September 12.
