Caixin Global hosted the inaugural Asia New Vision Forum in Singapore from 12–13 June 2023, where policymakers, business leaders and renowned scholars convened to discuss a wide range of crucial topics. As the world continues to grapple with the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, the forum aimed to address pressing issues such as financial stability, global trade, technology, and sustainable development.

With the theme “Recalibrating the Compass”, the forum served as a platform for high-level dialogues and action plans, focusing on four key visions: Global, Home, Tech, and Green.

During the opening remarks, John Thornton, Executive Chairman at Barrick Gold, and the Co-Chair at the event, stressed the importance of forging a stronger US-China relationship.

“I am confident that a positive and constructive relationship between the US and China will lead to a better world overall,” said Thornton. “My message is to encourage forums like this to raise self-awareness among people in this region […] and I urge each of you to reflect on your responsibility in shaping the future.”

Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat graced the event with the opening keynote speech, emphasizing the need to establish a new framework that fosters inclusive and sustainable development.

“We must continue to uphold an open, inclusive, and rules-based framework, to drive greater trade and investment,” said DPM Heng. “Competition is understandable, but it does not have to be zero-sum, nor is it the opposite of collaboration. Competition and collaboration can co-exist,” as he addressed the need to build strategic trust between the US and China.

The forum played host to multiple distinguished speakers as they shared their insights on key topics from global and Asian standpoints. Participants from diverse backgrounds engaged in open and in-depth discussions regarding issues that significantly impact Asia’s progress and global development.

One notable panel discussion titled “Navigating a multipolar world: Balancing power and cooperation in the global landscape” specifically focused on the evolving dynamics among Europe, China, and the United States. The panel shed light on the constructive collaboration between China and the four other emerging economies known as BRICS, underscoring the importance of balancing power dynamics while fostering cooperation.

Although the discussions on US-China relations took center stage, other panels delved into pressing issues such as addressing challenges in the electric vehicle (EV) revolution and exploring emerging trends in the medical and health industries. These discussions provided valuable insights and highlighted the potential for growth and collaboration in these sectors.

The Asia New Vision Forum served as a conducive platform for exchanging ideas from global, Asian, and Chinese perspectives. By focusing on key areas of significance and bringing together influential stakeholders, the Forum has the potential to leave a lasting impact on Asia’s business landscape and contribute to a prosperous and inclusive future.
