It wasn’t so long ago that the “four AI dragons” of China appeared frequently in headlines. That was when China-based tech companies were being sanctioned by the United States government, one after the other.
One of those dragons is Megvii. Its Brain++ productivity platform and Face++ facial recognition software have received no shortage of coverage, and the company has been eager to shape itself as a multifaceted deep learning framework developer.
Much of that research was spearheaded by Sun Jian, a computer vision expert who passed away in mid-June. Sun left behind a void. The AI field lost a great mind, and Megvii lost its chief scientist.
Sun’s legacy is partly in Megvii’s applications, but it isn’t clear if the company will be able to keep up with the pace of innovation that is also defined by the ways its many competitors evolve, both at home and abroad.
KrASIA published an article that unpacks Megvii’s technical strides—and the many challenges that the company must contend with. You can read it here.
